Tag: Reading Habits

First tag after the relaunch and I thought this one about reading habits was a really good one, a little different from the usual book tags. I can’t remember where I originally saw it now so forgive me for not linking back!

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
My bed. It’s just the comfiest place ever to read. I have fairy lights around my headboard for when I just have my lamp on which creates the perfect light for reading whilst remaining cosy.

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?
Bookmarks! Though I’m picky about them, they can’t be any of these page grabbing ones or really thick ones – I don’t want them damaging my books thank you very much! Also how hard is it to find nice bookmarks?! If I can’t find a bookmark then sure I’ll use a piece of paper or something.

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter or certain number of pages?
I’ll sometimes have a quick flick though to see how many pages until the end of the chapter I’m currently reading, if it’s not that many I’ll finish the chapter – if it’s a lot, I’ll finish the page or paragraph depending on which makes the most sense.
I don’t hold myself to a certain number of pages either – unless I have a deadline to meet, which isn’t that often.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?
Yes, though I’m trying to stop the eating part because I read a lot, so it’s probably not the healthiest of combinations. So lately, just a drink most of the time. I’ll get snacks only if I’m having some serious “me time”.

5. Do you watch TV or listen to music while reading?
Nope, not unless I’m in a room with other people and they have the TV or music on. I do like to completely shut the world out though.

6. One book at a time or several at once?
I usually have at least on the go. One novel and a book with short stories in or some other kind of lighter reading. I do this because sometimes I find I want to read but I’m too tired and just don’t have the head space to take in a lot of detail, so I can just pick up my lighter reading on those days.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?
I mostly read at home apart from when I’m on holiday somewhere but even then I find it really hard to concentrate has my PTSD really gets in the way of being able to relax and absorb myself in a book. Though I did manage it quite easily when visiting Maaike. The combination of good friends and the comfiest sofa I’ve ever sat and slept on really helped!

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?
Silently in my head, unless I’m reading to my great nieces. Other than that I’ve not read out loud since high school – which I hated!

9. Do you ever read ahead or skip pages?
Nope. Never. I can’t even grasp why one would do that!

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
I try to keep them new but I don’t ruin my reading experience trying to keep it that way. If the spine is looking well read then that’s fine, but there’s no way I’m bending my books all ways that would break the spine.

11. Do you write in your books?
No. Not unless I need to for education – which in the end adds to the charm but I still have to have a little battle with myself to be able to highlight and make notes in them!

If you want to do this tag, feel free! Leave me the link to yours in the comments below so I can check it out!

Happy Relaunch Day! (+Updates)

So today I “relaunch this blog. Don’t worry I’m not getting rid of any of the old posts, I’m just kicking back into a more regular posting schedule plus concentrating more on the book side of things from now on. There will still be posts on other subjects of course but books will feature most regularly.

Blog
So what else is new? Well I have a new layout as you can see. On the right I’ve added a Goodreads widget so you can see what I’m reading right now and I’ve also updated my about page.  Also check out the banner image I made! Simple changes but they make things a bit more streamlined.
I already have quite a few book reviews written (I have quite a few to catch up on), as well as other bookish topics, some beauty things and lets not forget we’re approaching the run up to Christmas!
I’m unsure if I’ll be sticking to a specific format (e.g. reviews on a Friday, other book post Tuesday) – does anyone prefer that, or just write as I go but regularly?

Reading
I have still been reading this year and I set myself a target of reading 30 books this year, I’m not sure I’ll reach that target but it’s just more of a general target than like when I did the 50 Books Challenge. I’m currently at 18/30.
I’ve been trying to finish off some of the series’ that I’ve been reading because I feel like I’m in the middle of a few too many.  So with the exceptions of the likes of Jim Butcher, Terry Pratchett and others who have a whole bunch of books in a series; I’m finishing some off and not starting any other series until close to Christmas or next year.

Life
I’ve had to do some real hard work on my health this year but I’m now at a point where I’m happy with my progress and I’ve got some good momentum behind me. Which means, time and head space to be able to blog again.

Blog Relaunch!

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Life has been a lot more focused on progress with my health this year and so I haven’t been posting much at all on this blog. I’m not in a much better place to be writing again so I’m going to get writing posts, and shall resume blogging here on October 1st.

I’m switching the focus of my blog a little and concentrating a little more on the book side of things, there will still be some beauty posts and things. I just want to make this little place on the internet a little more focused.

Big thank you to my followers that have stayed with me this year. Stay tuned for more.

End of Year Update (2013 Review)

Note: Bare with me, I need to cover a few things in this post.
I’ve been dragging my feet a lot with blogging lately, there’s just been a lot of (stressful) things going on in life that I just don’t have the energy to blog or to do anything interesting to blog about. My reading has been really slow – apart from one book, the reviews here are actually up to date.
I’ve also been steering this blog into a more “bookish” direction, but I must admit, I’m missing blogging about other things (or I would do if I was doing anything interesting). So I think I’m going to go back to mostly books but also more “me” in here.

2013 has been a rather rollercoaster year for me. I’ve had some great times but it’s been stressful and challenging.
I don’t talk about this a whole lot here but 2013 has been the year I’ve had to take a step back and look at what I need. This has meant I’ve had to give up work/looking for work after realising that it’s too much for me to handle, I’ve spent years trying to hold down a job and feel okay/comfortable in a work environment and it’s just not happening. So I have to step back and take time to deal with my Depression, Anxiety and PTSD (and whatever else I discover along the way!) and start seeing a psychologist which is mega exhausting.
I’ve also spent a huge amount of time stressing over many communications with the government to secure some benefits whilst I get on my feet – they’re not very understanding about mental illnesses. This is still going on and won’t be resolved until mid-January (please pray and hope that things go in my favour, I don’t know what I’ll do if they don’t, I’ll be stuck!).

Anyway, onto better things. I was a failure at most of my goals for 2013 but I did do two of the things I planned. I visited Maaike in Holland and whilst there visited an old Library. Visiting Holland was most definitely the biggest highlight of my year and a huge achievement – my anxiety didn’t get the better of me (although it tried on the plane over there as I was flying alone). Thinking back to it still makes me smile now.

Right now, I’m holding off making plans for 2014 until this whole situation with benefits is sorted out – so there won’t be a post with goals and plans, etc until after then as things are just too uncertain. I do have a few posts ready in my head to write though so as long as I’m not super stressed out like I have been lately, I’ll still get a few up in the early half of January.

Hope 2013 was good to you!

Impromptu Hiatus (But I’m Back!)

Huge apologies for the impromptu hiatus for a about 2 months; life has just been a little complicated with hospital appointments, financial issues, stress, etc. Generally I’ve been slipping from taking some huge leaps in my life to hiding under my duvet and blogging just required too much head space and too much energy.

However, I must tell you that I did manage to make my trip to Holland, it was super nerve-wrecking but I had an awesome time – plus whilst I was there I managed to tick off another thing on my wishlist/plans for this year – visit an old Library. I’m not sure if I should really do a whole blog post (or two because it could be quite long!) about the whole trip to be honest – but if anyone is really interested in that, I’ll do one. I’ll perhaps do a haul too?

I have 2 book reviews I want to get into in the next few posts – one is of a book, I’ve had a sneak peek of, and the other is The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer.

Hopefully the break from blogging as done me good, so now I can refocus the blog a little and enjoy writing again. Just bare with me whilst I get back into the flow of blogging.
